Interactions of metal ions with antimicrobial peptides

As the Biologically Active Metallopeptides Research Group, our research focus on the coordination chemistry, structure and thermodynamics of studied metal - peptide complexes. We especially concentrate on the interactions of antimicrobial peptides with biologically essential metals like Zn(II), Cu(II) or Ni(II), trying to find and understand the relationship between coordination chemistry, biological activity and mode of action. Also, we took a closer look at metallophores – chelating particles that help pathogens in metal ions uptake. To obtain a full characteristic of examined complexes, we utilize plenty of analytical methods like mass spectrometry, potentiometric titration and spectroscopic methods (UV, CD, NMR, and EPR).
